Cape Town – South African companies have secured nine of the 10 highest positions among African businesses featured in Forbes’ World’s Best Employers 2026 ranking, with Nedbank emerging as the continent’s top-ranked employer at 26th globally.
According to Business Insider Africa, the ranking highlights leading African businesses across banking, telecommunications, healthcare and industry, with financial services dominating the list.
Nedbank leads the African contingent, followed by Standard Bank Group at 54th globally, Absa Group at 98th and FirstRand at 104th. Other companies among Africa’s top 10 include MTN Group, Investec, Sasol, Mediclinic International and Sanlam.
Nigeria’s Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), ranked 277th worldwide, is the only non-South African company among the continent’s 10 highest-ranked employers.
Perceptions of other companies
BusinessDay reported that six of the 10 African companies operate in financial services, underlining the sector’s strong representation in the rankings.
Forbes compiled the seventh annual ranking in partnership with market research firm Statista, drawing on feedback from more than 300,000 employees across over 50 countries. The global list features 900 companies headquartered in 52 countries.
According to Forbes, participants assessed employers on their willingness to recommend their workplaces to family and friends, alongside factors including employee benefits, talent development, working environments and training opportunities.
The ranking also considers perceptions of other companies within respondents’ industries and feedback about former employers.
Internationally active companies
Nedbank’s strong performance reflects the importance of workplace culture and employee recognition. Forbes highlighted the bank’s initiatives promoting inclusion, social engagement and peer-to-peer recognition, including its “The Nedbank Way” programme, which allows colleagues to acknowledge one another’s contributions.
However, the rankings reflect employee perceptions of selected large, internationally active companies rather than providing a comprehensive assessment of working conditions across Africa’s broader labour market.
The results nevertheless place South African businesses prominently among the continent’s most highly rated employers, while GTBank’s inclusion gives Nigeria representation in an African top 10 otherwise dominated by South African companies.
