Durban – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a man accused of threatening to shut down Moses Mabhida Stadium to prevent the MTN8 Cup final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns from taking place.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying the suspect had threatened to mobilise his followers to disrupt the highly anticipated football match.
According to police, the man had gathered a group of people at King Dinizulu Park with the intention of staging a march.
However, those who had gathered with him reportedly fled the scene.
The arrest comes amid concerns over threats to disrupt the match, which features two of South African football’s prominent clubs.
Police warned that individuals threatening public order and stability would face legal consequences.
“Police are reiterating that anyone who threatens to cause instability will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” SAPS said.
Police have not provided further details about the suspect or indicated what charges he may face.
The MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns is one of the major fixtures on the South African football calendar, attracting significant public interest and large crowds.
