North West – Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 55-year-old woman at Doornpan Farm outside Ottosdal in the North West.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, 5 October 2026, after police received a complaint of a possible farm attack and responded to the property.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the woman was allegedly attacked while attempting to open a gate to gain entry to the farm.
Police said the victim’s husband transported her to a hospital in Klerksdorp after she sustained injuries. She later died in hospital.
“Upon arrival, police were informed that the victim had been transported to a hospital in Klerksdorp by her husband after sustaining injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries in hospital,” SAPS said.
Two male suspects, aged 32 and 33, were arrested after they were allegedly identified by a witness. A third suspect remains at large.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Ottosdal Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 8 October, facing charges of murder.
The circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams condemned the killing and praised investigators for what he described as the swift arrest of the suspects.
“The safety and security of people living and working in rural areas remains a priority for the South African Police Service,” Adams said.
“We are deeply concerned by this tragic incident and extend our condolences to the van Zyl family.”
Adams said police would continue working with rural communities, farmers and other stakeholders to strengthen crime prevention measures.
“We will continue to work closely with rural communities, farmers and other stakeholders to strengthen crime prevention measures and ensure that those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice,” he said.
He also urged people living in rural areas to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to police.
“We also urge members of rural communities to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to the police and work with law enforcement to enhance safety in farming areas,” Adams said.
Police investigations are continuing as authorities search for the third suspect.
