Emtee walks free on R2,000 bail after estranged wife drops case

Cape Town – Rapper Mthembeni “Emtee” Ndevu was granted R2,000 bail on Wednesday after appearing at the Midrand Magistrates’ Court, bringing an end to his latest stint in custody. 

His release came after his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy, formally withdrew the assault case against him. 

Emtee had been arrested for allegedly violating a protection order obtained by Chinsamy. He was initially expected to appear in court for trial on Wednesday, but the proceedings instead focused on bail after Chinsamy submitted her withdrawal on Monday. 

According to TimesLIVE, Chinsamy told the court that she had decided to withdraw the matter for the sake of their children. The couple share three children and have endured a highly publicised and turbulent separation. 

“I made the decision to withdraw the case. I’d like to close this chapter and move on with my life,” Chinsamy said in court.

According to The Citizen, Wednesday’s proceedings marked the second time this year that Emtee had been taken into custody in connection with the protection order. He previously spent a night behind bars in June before being granted R1,000 bail.

At the time, the court ordered him not to communicate with Chinsamy or post anything about her online. 

Although Emtee is now out of custody, his release comes with strict conditions. The court ordered the rapper to continue complying with the existing protection order. He must also refrain from communicating with Chinsamy and may not post about her on social media. 

TimesLIVE also reported that Emtee’s father, Lumikile Ndevu, said he and the family were now able to breathe a sigh of relief following his son’s release.
