Cape Town – Cabinet says South Africans who return home will always be welcomed, amid reports that some white South Africans who relocated to the United States under what it called the “falsehood” of a white genocide have allegedly been denied US visas.
In the Cabinet statement following its meeting on 29 July, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said:
“Cabinet has noted allegations that white South Africans who chose to resettle in the United States of America (USA) under the falsehood of a white genocide in South Africa have been denied VISAs in that country.”
She reiterated that South Africa remains home to all its citizens, regardless of their political beliefs.
“Cabinet has reiterated that South Africans irrespective of their political views will always have a home in this country without the fear of political persecution and suppression in accordance with the laws of the Republic.”
Collective national effort
Ntshavheni acknowledged that South Africa continues to face socio-economic challenges affecting all citizens, saying these should be addressed through a collective national effort involving government, business, labour, civil society and individuals, while recognising the legacy of apartheid and the need for redress.
Cabinet also urged South Africans to reject racial division.
“Cabinet calls on all South Africans to continue to reject those seeking to reverse the gains of our freedom through racial mobilisation to recommit to the goal of building a united, non-racial and prosperous South Africa.”
The remarks come after reports that the US rejected visa applications from hundreds of Afrikaners seeking refugee status under President Donald Trump’s programme, which was based on widely discredited claims of a “white genocide” in South Africa, The Citizen reported.
South Africa has consistently rejected those claims, maintaining that violent crime affects all communities and that land reform policies are not race-specific.
