Cape Town – EFF leader Julius Malema has rejected claims that he protected Major-General Feroz Khan from parliamentary scrutiny, insisting he merely questioned the reasons for calling the suspended senior police officer to appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee.
Malema also lashed out at MK Party members, describing them as “cowards” who “can’t reason”.
Addressing a media briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday, Malema acknowledged that he knows Khan but denied having any improper relationship with him.
“I never get an opportunity to interact with Khan. I know Khan. And I’ve already made it very clear, I know Khan,” he said.
Malema explained that after learning Khan had been shot, he contacted businessman Mohammed Sayed but not Khan to establish what had happened.
“If any call which I made was to Mohammed… I said, what’s happening? Did they really shoot this guy or what is the story? Because others say he was shot, others say he was not shot.”
According to Malema, Sayed confirmed that Khan had been shot and was in hospital, after which he left the matter there.

“I couldn’t go and see him, I can’t call him, I can’t do anything until Madlanga is done his work.”
Malema maintained that if Khan had committed any wrongdoing, it was for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to deal with.
“If there’s anything wrong that Khan has done, the Madlanga Commission must take him on.”
Malema also dismissed allegations that he blocked Khan from appearing before Parliament’s ad hoc committee, saying he simply wanted those proposing Khan’s appearance to explain why he should be called.
“It’s wrong for that young man of MK to say I prevented Khan from coming to the other committee. I never did that. I asked the question, on which basis are we calling Khan? Whoever said we must call Khan should have given the reasons why, because I had no reason to call Khan.”
He accused MK Party members of failing to justify their proposals before blaming him when Khan was not invited.

“They keep quiet, they run away, they don’t say anything. And then Khan doesn’t get called. They blame it on me, as if I was running the committee alone.”
Malema said he applies the same approach to all parliamentary matters, citing an occasion when an MP suggested judges should be summoned before the committee.
He said he challenged the proposal, arguing that it was too broad and that any request to call a judge should identify a specific individual and provide clear reasons.
“When it comes to the judiciary, you must be very specific. You must not just be using a blanket approach towards all the judges because that thing is the last line of defence. If we delegitimise that sphere of government, we must know we’re all in danger.”
Malema said the MP failed to name a specific judge despite repeated requests, insisting that questioning proposals before Parliament should not be interpreted as obstructing the committee’s work.
