Durban – A three-year-old girl was rushed to hospital after she was mauled by three dogs in Redcliffe, north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the attack occurred on Tuesday, 28 July, at an informal settlement in the area.
RUSA said its members responded to the scene at about 10:11 after receiving reports of a child being attacked by dogs.
“At approximately 10:11, members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were called out to an informal settlement where they found the child bleeding from multiple puncture wounds to her head and right leg,” the organisation said in a statement.
Preliminary information indicates that two male dogs escaped from a neighbouring property before attacking the child.
“It was established that two (2) male dogs had broken through a boundary fence from a neighbouring property while attempting to reach a female dog roaming the area. A third dog joined the attack before the animals were driven away,” RUSA said.
According to RUSA, the owner of the two dogs told responders the animals had been escaping from the property in recent weeks.
“According to the neighbour, her dogs had been frequently breaking out of the property in recent weeks due to the mating season,” the statement said.
The organisation added that the woman produced vaccination records for her two dogs.
“She produced inoculation records for her two (2) dogs, while the owner of the third dog could not be located,” RUSA said.
The child was transported to hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released an update on her condition or indicated whether any investigation or action will be taken following the incident.
