Limpopo – Police in Limpopo have opened an inquest following the recovery of the body of a 44-year-old man from the Limpopo River near the South Africa-Botswana border.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the body of Richard Kololo, a Botswana national, was recovered on Monday, 15 June 2026, at Werdevrede Farm under the Saamboubrug policing precinct.
Police spokespersons said officers were called to the scene after reports that a man had drowned in the Limpopo River on 9 June at about 5:30pm.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Kololo was travelling in a boat with three other occupants when the vessel reportedly sank, causing all four individuals to fall into the river.
After a search operation, his body was recovered nearly a week later.
Police have since launched an inquest to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the drowning.
The investigation is continuing.
