Buffelsdraai, KwaZulu-Natal – A six-year-old boy and his parents were shot during a violent armed robbery at a residence in Buffelsdraai on Monday evening, emergency responders have confirmed.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), its members were called to the scene at approximately 19:46 after reports of a shooting at an unnamed road in the area.
Upon arrival, officers interviewed witnesses who were present during the incident and who said two masked armed men had entered the home and held occupants hostage at gunpoint while waiting for the homeowners to return.
Witnesses said the attackers later learned that the family had arrived and parked at a neighbouring property. The hostages were then locked in a room and robbed of their cellphones before the suspects confronted the family outside.
It is alleged that the couple was held at gunpoint and shots were fired when they attempted to flee.
The 46-year-old father sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach, while the 41-year-old mother was shot in the left leg and right hand. Their six-year-old son was also struck once in the buttocks.
All three victims were transported privately to hospital for urgent medical treatment. Several spent cartridges were recovered at the scene.
The gunmen fled the area before the arrival of first responders. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
