Durban – Three security guards have been arrested in KwaNdengezi, KwaZulu-Natal, after a viral video showed an e-hailing driver being allegedly assaulted and his vehicle’s tyre shot during a violent confrontation on Wednesday morning, 3 June 2026.
The South African Police Service confirmed that the suspects, aged 28, 41 and 49, face charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and assault.
According to police, the incident unfolded on the MR518 road when the e-hailing driver was allegedly blocked by two security vehicles linked to a taxi association while picking up passengers.
The driver initially managed to escape but was later pursued, rammed, and forced to stop. It is further alleged that one of the security guards shot at the vehicle’s tyre while others assaulted the driver.
Police officers who were nearby intervened and rescued the driver.
The suspects were later handed over to police after members of the taxi association reportedly cooperated with law enforcement.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Phumelele Makoba, condemned the incident, urging security companies contracted to taxi associations to operate strictly within their mandate and not interfere in public transport operations.
“Nobody has the right to stop anyone from transporting passengers in their vehicles,” Makoba said, adding that firearms must be used in accordance with the Firearms Control Act.
Police have also launched an investigation into the security company involved, and three firearms were confiscated for ballistic testing. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
