Cape Town – Author and motivational speaker Rachel Kolisi has shared an update on her recovery after undergoing shoulder surgery last week, while also apologising for a photo she posted on social media that she felt appeared more dramatic than intended.
Rachel, who is the estranged wife of Siya Kolisi, first revealed that she had been hospitalised earlier this month. She later confirmed that she underwent shoulder surgery on Monday, 18 May, and recently took to her Instagram Stories to reassure followers that she is recovering well.
Sharing what she described as a “proof of life” video, Rachel joked about waiting until she was no longer on pain medication before speaking to her followers.
“I thought I would do a proof of life video… and I also thought it would be best to do a video when I was off pain medication. Just to ensure nothing interesting comes out of my mouth,” she said.
The Falling Forward author explained that although recovery has not been easy, she is doing well and slowly getting back to normal routines.
“All is well… I’m going to attempt a shower today. I had a shoulder operation on Monday (last week) and I’m really sorry that I put that second picture that I put on my post because it does look way more dramatic than what it needed to be, but I was just trying to show that the kids were doing a facial for me so I was trying to show something sweet,” she shared in another Instagram Story.
Rachel is a mother to two children, Nicholas, 11, and Keziah, 9, whom she shares with Siya Kolisi. According to The South African, she also legally adopted Siya’s younger siblings, Liyema and Liphelo, when they were children, making her a mother figure to four children.

Despite the challenges of recovery, Rachel expressed gratitude for the strong support system surrounding her during the difficult period.

“Obviously not ideal. But is what it is. Made it through the first week post op, only because I have the most amazing people around me. So grateful for every call, lift, message, meal, kids pick up, homework and and and.. THANK YOU,” she wrote.
As she continues to heal, Rachel’s openness about both the difficult and tender moments of recovery has drawn support from followers, many of whom praised her honesty and resilience.
