Eastern Cape – Police have launched a murder investigation following the killing of a senior municipal official in the Eastern Cape.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that 46-year-old Thumeka Bikwana, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Corporate Services at the Chris Hani District Municipality, was found dead at her home on Tuesday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 09:45 at Tshatshu Administrative Area, where a witness noticed the councillor’s driver waiting outside the property.
“It is alleged that… a witness saw the deceased’s driver’s vehicle parked in front of her yard… The driver complained that he had been waiting for a long time, but the councillor was not coming out,” SAPS said.
The witness then went to investigate and discovered the front door open.
“Inside, the deceased was lying on her back in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to her head,” police added.
Authorities said the motive for the killing remains unknown and no arrests have been made.
The case has been transferred to provincial organised crime detectives for further investigation.
Police have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward.
