Johannesburg — Police at OR Tambo International Airport have arrested a 26‑year‑old Brazilian national after intercepting cocaine worth an estimated R8.7 million, the South African Police Service confirmed.
The suspect, identified as transgender, was apprehended on Sunday afternoon upon arrival from Brazil.
“The 26-year-old transgender suspect was apprehended upon arrival on Sunday afternoon from Brazil after police, acting on intelligence, conducted a search of the suspect’s luggage,” police said.
Authorities said the arrest forms part of ongoing intelligence‑driven operations aimed at dismantling transnational drug trafficking networks operating through South Africa’s busiest port of entry.
OR Tambo has seen several recent successes in intercepting traffickers attempting to smuggle narcotics into the country.
Police described the operation as a significant step in disrupting the supply of illicit drugs and strengthening the fight against organised crime.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, on charges of drug trafficking.
