Lagos – All the passengers who were kidnapped off a bus on Wednesday in Nigeria’s central Benue State have been rescued, the regional governor said Sunday.
Africa’s most populous country has faced a surge of kidnapping attacks in recent months, particularly in the northern half of the country.
Such attacks are carried out by criminal gangs known as “bandits” seeking ransom money, and by jihadists.
The number of people kidnapped from the bus and rescued was not clear. Earlier, local police had said 14 were kidnapped, while Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia mentioned 15 people in comments to the press Sunday.
Earlier, the police said that seven suspects had been arrested.
Benue State is in a region which regularly faces tensions between Muslim Fulani herders and predominantly Christian farmers over land and natural resources.
