Cape Town – Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya has denied having any personal ties to individuals mentioned in KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations of corruption and political interference in the police service.
Testifying before Parliament’s ad hoc committee, which is probing Mkhwanazi’s claims, Sibiya rejected suggestions that he and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu colluded to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) to shield certain individuals.
Sibiya addressed his alleged links to , a North West businessman accused of having inside knowledge of police operations. He said he only knew Mogotsi as an ANC activist and had no personal relationship with him.
Mogotsi reportedly called Sibiya in December 2024 about tender corruption and an intelligence probe, which Sibiya found odd but not suspicious.
“I didn’t know him; I also Googled him at some point,” he said.
The two later met briefly during ANC’s January 8 celebrations, but Sibiya insisted their interaction was purely professional.
Sibiya also clarified his limited contact with Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, an attempted murder accused and police service provider. He said he first met Matlala in early 2024 when the businessman complained about issues with a police college healthcare tender. Sibiya said they met about five times and were not close, emphasising that his dealings with Matlala were official.
Matlala is currently in custody over an alleged 2023 assassination attempt and has been linked to the criminal cartel known as the “Big Five,” implicated in drug trafficking, extortion, and contract killings.
