Cape Town – The Gauteng Provincial Government has called on the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe multiple hospitals across the province following the shocking interim report into corruption at Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni.
In a statement released on 29 August, the Office of the Premier confirmed that a Secondment Agreement with the SIU was signed on 2 September 2022.
To further demonstrate its commitment, the provincial government endorsed the SIU’s application for a Presidential Proclamation on 23 January 2023, which it believed was crucial for recovering stolen funds, freezing assets, and exposing the full scope of the syndicate.
“We have established ourselves as the national leader in anti-corruption measures by implementing a set of groundbreaking initiatives.
“In the public interest, the Premier voluntarily committed in the 2023 State of the Province Address (SOPA) to release all forensic reports once related court and disciplinary proceedings have concluded.
“We are the only province to have conducted lifestyle audits for all MECs, DGs, HODs, and Supply Chain Management personnel, with a new report on the latter imminent.”

“We have further strengthened our efforts by establishing an independent Anti-Corruption Advisory Council and a pioneering Open Tender System, which brings transparency to adjudication,” said the Spokesperson for Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi.
Premier Lesufi confirmed that, since the 2023 SOPA commitment, the Gauteng Provincial Government has released 89 reports, taken consequence management actions against 88 individuals, and registered over 55 criminal cases with law enforcement.
The Premier commended the SIU for its work, offering his full support and affirming that the interim findings represent a crucial step toward justice and accountability.
Lesufi has ensured that all recommendations will be implemented without delay, in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Health, and swift, decisive disciplinary and administrative action will be taken against all officials implicated in this report.
Decisive action is expected from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) on the evidence provided by the SIU.
“We view this as a critical step in honouring Babita Deokaran’s legacy and fulfilling our promise that her death would not be in vain. The people of Gauteng deserve accountability, and we will leave no stone unturned to achieve it.
The SIU’s investigation has confirmed that Babita Deokaran was a true hero. We will honour her courage by ensuring our public service is not a sanctuary for the corrupt,” said Premier Lesufi.
