Cape Town is dying, at least in footballing terms.
In one devastating season, both of the Mother City’s top clubs have been flushed out of the Premier Soccer League structure, writes Cape {town} Etc.
Cape Town City FC, once a contender for trophies, has dropped into the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Cape Town Spurs, a club whose lineage stretches back decades, have suffered back-to-back relegations and are now facing life in the third tier.
But to call this a ‘bad season’ would be naive. This is a full-blown footballing crisis, decades in the making, and it exposes the rot from the boardroom to the grassroots. Cape Town football has collapsed, and no one should pretend to be surprised.
