East London – A video showing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters chanting “Kill the Boer” while carrying a dismembered mannequin head has sparked public outrage.
The footage went viral on social media as supporters travelled to East London to back party leader Julius Malema, who appeared in court for a pre-sentencing hearing after being found guilty of the unlawful use of a firearm at a 2015 party event.

Malema is due back in court on 15 April for sentencing.
The controversial song, “Kill The Boer” (Dubul’ ibhunu), has historical roots in the anti-apartheid struggle and has been sung by political figures including Jacob Zuma.
While some members of the public have condemned the song as promoting violence, South Africa’s courts have ruled it is protected under freedom of speech and not considered hate speech.
Malema has defended continuing to sing the song as honoring the legacy of anti-apartheid struggle heroes.

In May last year, Malema said the controversial lyrics were “the heritage of our struggle” and vowed to keep on using them.
“It is not my song. I did not compose this song,” Malema said in televised comments. “The struggle heroes composed this song. All I am doing it to defend the legacy of our struggle.”
“Therefore I will never stop singing” the song, he said. “That will be a betrayal to the struggle of our people.”
