Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has accused suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of sharing sensitive police information with businessman Brown Mogotsi.
Speaking at the Madlanga Commission on Friday, Mkhwanazi said Mogotsi often appeared to have detailed knowledge of police operations, including matters Mkhwanazi himself was unaware of.
Mkhwanazi described receiving WhatsApp messages from Mogotsi in September 2024, which included copies of official police documents and screenshots from Crime Intelligence meetings.
The message reportedly included a copy of a SAPS occurrence book sent by Mogotsi.

“He told me there was an attempt to discredit me,” said Mkhwanazi.
He added: “So he sent me a copy of this. And the contents of the occurrence book and the factual reportwere exactly the same,” said Mkhwanazi.
“It surprised me because these are documents of the police. A person not in law enforcement should not be in possession of this. He’s from the North West, but he is in possession of a copy of the occurrence book from Empangeni in KZN.
“There are no flights from Northwest to Mpangeni. To get there, we’ll have to take at least two flights to obtain a copy of this occurrence book. As well as the letter that he attached.”
He raised concerns that Mogotsi, a civilian, had access to confidential information and appeared to influence ministerial decisions.

The commissioner also explained his involvement in a case regarding drugs and ammunition at a correctional facility, emphasising proper investigative procedures.
He highlighted Mogotsi’s communications with Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, revealing Mogotsi’s awareness of police raids and the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team — information Mkhwanazi only learned about later.
Mkhwanazi said that Mchunu shared “too much information” with Mogotsi, a non-police individual, giving him undue insight into investigations and Crime Intelligence operations.
