Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has unveiled bold reforms aimed at growing the economy and creating jobs, proposing practical alternatives to the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy, the Employment Equity Act, and the Expropriation Act.
On 11 August, DA leader John Steenhuisen addressed South Africans to outline the party’s plans to improve the country’s economy.
The DA has introduced a six-point plan featuring non-negotiable measures aimed at jumpstarting economic growth and creating more jobs and opportunities.
“We are here today to launch our plan to turbocharge the South African economy.
“What we need to focus on doing, is removing the roadblocks to growth and building a new superhighway towards growth and prosperity,” said Steenhuisen.
In launching this economic boost plan, Steenhuisen identified three legislative “roadblocks” hindering the country’s economic prosperity: the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act, the Employment Equity Act, and the Expropriation Act.
“Triple B and the racial qoutas that go along with it have failed. Over the last decade black unemployment has grown and black household income has fallen dramatically.
“While ANC ministers sit on their hands, DA ministers have already started implementing much-needed reforms in their departments. They are all here today, and can speak more to this if required.” – @jsteenhuisen#DAatWork

“These policies have failed and together with expropriation without compensation creates an environment that deters investment, hobbles growth and job creation; and ensures that the majority of South African remained locked out of opportunity in this country,” said Steenhuisen.
In response to the shortcoming of the ANC, the DA has introduced its own alternatives and policy changes that it believes would grow the economy of the country, the six policies include:
- Removing Job killing policies and Laws to enable more investment, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
-
Fixing South Africa’s energy crisis to guarantee affordable and reliable electricity through a competitive market.
-
Turning around failing railways, ports, and digital infrastructure for a competitive, connected, and modern economy.
-
Refocusing public expenditure, eliminating waste and bailouts, and supporting sustainable, pro-growth public finances.
-
Fixing collapsing municipalities to deliver better services by stabilising coalitions, professionalising administrations, and decentralising powers.
-
Cracking down on organised crime and corruption, by professionalising and decentralising public safety.
