Johannesburg – Former MK party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has launched the Afrika Mayibuye Movement, a newly registered political party set to contest the 2026 local government elections and the 2029 national elections.
Speaking at the launch on Friday in Midrand, Shivambu said the party is not contesting symbolically but to win power.
The organisation has already approved a leadership structure, including national officials, women’s and youth wings, and a medical professionals’ team.

The party’s Afrika Mayibuye Restoration Manifesto identifies 100 key challenges facing South Africa, including unemployment, inequality, debt, and landlessness, and outlines its ideology, values, and positions on issues such as immigration.
“We are going to contest all the wards in the 2026 local government elections. We’re going to contest to win all the municipalities in 2026. We are going to contest to win the general elections in 2029,” Shivambu said.
He added: “We are not contesting for the sake of contesting. We’re contesting with the aim, and we are going to win the elections in 2029.”
The movement was born out of a nationwide consultation process with professionals, pastors, traditional leaders, and ordinary citizens. Shivambu said the feedback showed South Africans wanted meaningful change, not empty promises.

Mayibuye’s colours — black, green, gold, red, and purple — symbolise African identity, land rebirth, mineral wealth, liberation struggles, and African royalty. Its logo features a clenched fist holding a spear pen, representing a fight for freedom through knowledge and ideas.
Shivambu, expelled from the MK party in July for unauthorised activities, insisted the Mayibuye Movement is not a cult, family project, or enrichment scheme, but a revolutionary force to fight corruption, advance workers’ rights, and ensure healthcare, education, and fair resource distribution.
