Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa has said he will reserve comment on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) until the findings of both the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee are made public.
The announcement comes after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu testified before MPs last week, revealing that he had informed Ramaphosa about his decision to close the PKTT, a unit established to investigate politically motivated killings.
“I appointed the Madlanga Commission to investigate and go into the allegations that have been made against Minister Mchunu. So a lot has been said and a lot will continue to be said. As the person who appointed the commission, I will await the moment when the proceedings and when a report is tabled to me before I comment,” Ramaphosa said.

“I cannot run a contemporaneous comment about the proceedings that are taking place and my approach is – I will wait until all the matters are properly ventilated and thereafter, we will be able to comment. So I think let’s wait for that moment.
“And in fact, it is with due respect and regard to the work that is being done by judge Madlanga and the Commissioners. It is only correct that we should wait until they have proceeded further with the work that they are doing.”
The Madlanga Commission, chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Madlanga, is investigating claims of criminality and corruption in the criminal justice system, while the parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee is examining broader issues of police accountability and oversight.
