Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on Tuesday testified before parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating corruption in the criminal justice system, alleging widespread misconduct within the crime intelligence division.
He claimed some officials have engaged in corrupt activities, mismanaged funds, and operated with impunity, despite reports being submitted to oversight bodies.
Mkhwanazi cited examples, including the misuse of funds to build a wall at former police minister Nathi Mthethwa’s home.
“The minister never asked for the wall. Members of crime intelligence took the money and built the wall so they could gain control of the minister, allowing them to loot the money on their own, leaving the minister unable to say anything,” he said.
He said crime intelligence boss Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo is attempting reforms but is undermined, and he called for a complete shutdown of the unit to remove entrenched “bad” actors.
Mkhwanazi warned that exposing the full truth could have severe consequences for the country.
