Cape Town – Former president Thabo Mbeki has warned that the ANC and South Africa are facing serious, unresolved challenges, saying he is uncertain about the country’s future.
Speaking at the funeral of veteran ANC leader and anti-apartheid activist Titus Mafolo in Johannesburg, Mbeki questioned the direction of the country amid rising crime, unemployment, economic hardship and social distress.
“The ANC is in problems, serious problems. South Africa is in serious problems. I don’t know about yourselves, but me, I don’t know where South Africa will be tomorrow,” Mbeki said.

President Thabo Mbeki, we share your sentiments—🇿🇦 is directionless because the ANC is directionless.

Mbeki described Mafolo as a principled leader and close adviser whose guidance is sorely missed at a time when the ANC, after 30 years in power, is under growing criticism for corruption, failing institutions and declining public trust.
He said South Africa is poorer without Mafolo’s leadership and urged public servants and political leaders to honour his legacy through ethical leadership and renewed commitment to nation-building.
