Cape Town – Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the City of Johannesburg council no longer has jurisdiction over former transport MMC Kenny Kunene following his resignation.
Speaking during an interview with eNCA, Morero said that since Kunene is no longer a councillor, the matter falls outside the council’s authority and is now strictly a police and internal party issue.
“Council works quite differently. He has resigned as a counsellor, meaning he’s no longer part of council, and council, therefore does not have jurisdiction over him in terms of our own code of conduct as councillors,” the mayor said.

“It’s a matter for the police and his party to investigate the matter of his being in the place of the guy who is alleged to have been involved in criminal activity. So it’s not our matter, it’s a police matter, and it’s a matter of the party. He has given us a resignation, so the council has therefore officially released him as a councillor.”
He emphasised that the council has officially accepted Kunene’s resignation and cannot investigate his involvement in the case linked to DJ Sumbody’s murder.
Morero confirmed he received the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) letter demanding a full investigation into former MMC Kenny Kunene’s conduct, though he noted it likely arrived before Kunene’s resignation.
He said his office would respond formally and emphasised that the city is now working to appoint a new MMC for Transport.
