Cape Town – Patriotic Alliance leader and Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has defended his party’s deputy president, Kenny Kunene, after Kunene was found at the home of Katiso “KT” Molefe, the alleged mastermind behind the 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody (Oupa John Sefoka).
Kunene was present at the Sandton residence of the controversial businessman on Monday when police arrived to make the arrest.
According to IOL, McKenzie insists Kunene was “set up”, although Kunene himself claims it was a coincidence.
McKenzie emphasised Kunene’s non-violent nature, their shared past as ex-convicts, and their strong brotherly bond.
He believes Kunene would never risk his rebuilt reputation by associating with criminals and has placed Kunene on a 30-day leave of absence from party duties pending an independent legal investigation, expected to conclude within a month.
“If there’s a murder that happened and there are only two suspects, me and Kenny, I must be the main suspect. You know, Kenny could’ve had a gun, had a fly,” the report quoted McKenzie as saying on the sidelines of the National Assembly in Cape Town on Wednesday.
“That guy has such a soft character. Let me tell you, the mistake with him – that’s my fight with him always – is that he’s too accessible. You call Kenny and ask, ‘Where are you?’ He says, ‘I’m in the squatter camp; there’s a party going on.’ Next time, ‘I’m in the suburbs meeting someone.’ He’s never at home. He’s always busy, and he’s accessible.”

“Kenny Kunene will be investigated. And I’m going to tell you who’s going to investigate him: lawyers of good character,” McKenzie said in a live broadcast on social media.
“While he’s being investigated, I’m going to remove him from being an MMC. I am going to write to them. I’m also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is done.”

Kunene claimed, during an interview with Newzroom Afrika that he was at Molefe’s home to facilitate a potential interview for a journalist from his media outlet, Africa Global News.
“It was just a question of we were there at the time when the police were arriving, because less than five minutes of us being there. Whilst we were on the drive way, we had not even gone into the house, then the police arrived,” he said.

Kunene denied knowing Molefe and said his presence was coincidental.
However, opposition parties, particularly the DA, have slammed his explanation as “laughable” and accused the PA of links to criminality and the underworld, The Citizen reported.
