Mchunu defended his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), saying he was “sober” when he made the call and that the unit was not part of the official SAPS structure.
He argued the move aimed to redirect police focus toward the country’s growing violent crime problem, not to hinder investigations into politically motivated killings.

The 11-member committee, chaired by ANC NEC member Soviet Lekganyane and including representatives from the ANC, DA, EFF, MKP, IFP, and PA, was formed to probe allegations raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Mchunu denied any personal involvement in corruption, insisting his priority has always been to promote accountability and root out corruption within the police.
Chairperson Lekganyane said the committee’s mission is to uncover the truth and ensure South Africa’s institutions operate with transparency and justice. Hearings will continue in the coming weeks.
