Cape Town – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has thrown his weight behind KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, calling for his elevation to national policing structures and urging the government to ensure his continued service in the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Malema said Mkhwanazi’s leadership in KwaZulu-Natal had made a significant impact and warned against sidelining him.
“We are at the point where we can’t lose Mkhwanazi. KwaZulu-Natal has become too small for him,””Malema said. “He must be elevated to national duties. His contract must be renewed, and he must not be victimised.”

Malema also called for transparency in the appointment process, saying Mkhwanazi’s current post should be formally advertised to allow him to reapply.
“We want him to be given a fair chance. Let them advertise the post now so that he can reapply like everyone else. What we do not want is political interference that pushes out capable individuals,” he said.

Mkhwanazi, who has served as the provincial commissioner since 2018, is known for his hands-on leadership approach.
He recently alleged political interference and high-level corruption within the South African Police Service, implicating Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shandrack Sibiya.
