Johannesburg – Former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi has sparked controversy after a video of her showcasing a luxury outfit circulated on social media.
Mashazi appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of political interference, corruption, and misconduct in the justice sector.

According to The Citizen, she faces accusations of halting investigations into suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department chief Julius Mkhwanazi, accused of sexual harassment, corruption, and irregular promotions.
In the video, Mashazi highlights her designer items, including Bulgari jewelry, a diamond-encrusted Audemars Piguet watch (worth R560 000–R700 000), a Dolce & Gabbana dress, Hermès Oran sandals, and a Hermès Birkin Kelly Croc bag (over R800 000).
She credits her luxurious taste to her sophisticated upbringing.
“I grew up in a very sophisticated family; my father used to like fashion, and my mum. They used to buy us expensive clothes — you know, good leather shoes — and motivated us so that we are able to afford life,” she says.
The video drew mixed reactions online, with some praising her style while others questioned how she can afford such expensive items on a city manager’s salary, which for the highest-paid in Ekurhuleni in 2023-24 was R4.57 million.
Take a look at some of the reactions:
