Johannesburg – Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has assured residents that service delivery would continue despite the city hosting the G20 Leaders Summit at Nasrec.
Responding to criticism that the city’s cleaning, road, and bridge projects were done solely for the summit, Morero said that these efforts were part of ongoing plans to improve Johannesburg’s infrastructure, safety, and livability.
“Check us on Tuesday, if we are not on the ground on Tuesday, then it means we were doing it for the G20. But if you see us in all the regions continuing to provide unblocked service delivery,” he said.

He said the summit helped accelerate existing programs and pledged that service delivery and city development would continue beyond the event.
“It’s on a course to reclaim itself and create a better city for people, a clean, livable and safer city. That’s what is guiding us in this problem. Of course, the G20 came at a time when we had already started to implement those programmes to reclaim the inner city.

“The G20 might have also helped us to actually accelerate our work and we will continue post the G20 to implement the work that we are doing.
“Whether it’s infrastructure, refurbishment, service delivery issues, financial sustainability, those are the issues that we are focused on by law enforcement and we will continue to do so,” he said.
The two-day summit has concluded with the adoption of the G20 declaration.
