Cape Town – The provincial branch of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has condemned a viral video circulating on TikTok that targets South Africans of Indian descent, calling its message “racist, inflammatory and a direct threat to social cohesion.”
In the video — shared by a social-media user who reportedly describes himself as a mining entrepreneur — the speaker argues that Indians living in South Africa have another country to “go back to” and claims they would not defend or stand up for South Africa if “shit hit the fan.”
Responding to the video, the ANC’s KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson, Fanle Sibisi, said: “This reckless and ignorant statement has no place in our democracy and directly undermines the values upon which our nation was founded.”
He added that South Africa is “a constitutional democracy built on equality, dignity and non-racialism,” and that such attempts to pit communities against one another are “profoundly offensive” and “deeply unjust.”
The ANC warned that content of this nature fuels division and risks inciting hostility among racial groups — especially in KwaZulu-Natal, a province with a painful history of racial conflict.
The video apparently surfaced amid renewed attention following the visit of Narendra Modi — Prime Minister of India — to South Africa for the recent G20 Summit.
The ANC said that the warm reception given to Modi underscored the longstanding solidarity between India and South Africa, including India’s role in the fight against apartheid — a legacy the party argued should never be distorted or ridiculed.
According to The Star, the Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission described the video as “dangerous and divisive,” stressing that South Africans of Indian origin are not foreigners but citizens whose families have lived in the country for generations and contributed significantly to its development.
