Cape Town – Brown Mogotsi has stood by his claim that he narrowly survived an assassination attempt in Vosloorus — insisting it was no staged drama — while testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Testifying on Wednesday, Mogotsi told the commission: “Those people followed me for so long … when they saw my car, they fired a shot … by luck … I managed to drive … fortunately, they passed … that’s when I ran for my life.”
He said he appeared before the commission “at my own cost” and is paying for his own security, emphasising that despite being advised he did not need to attend, he came because he wants to assist the inquiry.
Mogotsi added that he was particularly disturbed by suggestions that the incident was orchestrated: “But before I could even make a statement, they were saying ‘this may be a staged assassination …’ and that’s what made me very worried.”

Mogotsi also told the commission he fears for his safety once the hearings conclude. “I’m coming here at my own cost … I’m paying for my own security protection … after this commission, I may need protection.”
Under cross-examination, he faced tough questioning from evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson, who highlighted inconsistencies in his previous statements and even accused him of “lying under oath.”
Mogotsi rejected the allegation, saying that while his recollection may not be perfect, he never intended to mislead anyone in sworn testimony.
