Social media erupts over national prayer vigil for suspended Mchunu

Johannesburg – A planned 12-hour “National Prayer for Senzo Mchunu” at Mbombela Civic Centre on Valentine’s Day has sparked strong reactions on social media, with some offering support while others mock the event.
Although organisers reportedly received informal approval from Mchunu, his spokesperson said the prayer is not officially sanctioned, and the suspended former police minister does not plan to attend, according to The Citizen. 

Mchunu was placed on special leave in July 2025 following allegations that he interfered in police investigations and helped shield corrupt figures, including claims that he disbanded the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.

The allegations, raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, led to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into corruption and political interference in the justice system.

Mchunu denies wrongdoing, saying his actions were lawful administrative decisions.

Public reaction to the prayer event reflects broader divisions, with critics calling it a publicity stunt and supporters arguing Mchunu deserves spiritual support and due process.
