Mchunu was placed on special leave in July 2025 following allegations that he interfered in police investigations and helped shield corrupt figures, including claims that he disbanded the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.
The allegations, raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, led to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into corruption and political interference in the justice system.

Mchunu denies wrongdoing, saying his actions were lawful administrative decisions.
