Cape Town – The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have begun a joint operational scanning exercise in Cape Town as part of preparations for the planned deployment of soldiers to crime hotspots.
In a statement, SAPS said the exercise, taking place from 18 to 19 March, involves a limited air and ground presence in selected areas and should not be confused with the actual rollout of troops.
“The exercise which should not be mistaken for the actual commencement of deployment of the SANDF, comprises air and ground presence of limited forces at various identified locations,” the statement read.
Authorities said the operation is aimed at ensuring coordination between security forces ahead of the full deployment.
“The operational exercise currently underway is essential preparation for the integrated forces ahead of the actual deployment,” SAPS said.
Members of the public have been urged to allow security personnel to carry out their work without interference and to avoid speculation about the activity in affected areas.
“Members of the public are urged to respect the operational space these forces require and refrain from speculating about their presence in the targeted areas,” the statement added.
President Cyril Ramaphosa first announced during the State of the Nation Address on 12 February 2026 that SANDF troops would be deployed to assist police in tackling gang violence and illegal mining in identified hotspots.
The planned deployment forms part of broader efforts to stabilise high-crime areas in Cape Town through coordinated action between law enforcement and the military.
