Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has demanded urgent accountability from Defence Minister Angie Motshekga following the theft of ammunition at Bloemspruit Air Force Base.
According to IOL, DA defence spokesperson Chris Hattingh described the incident as the result of “rotten security”, citing broken alarms, dead CCTV, and poor perimeter lighting.
The party has called for a comprehensive, costed base-security recovery plan within seven days, along with overdue reports on the total value of stolen equipment and the progress of an interdepartmental task team established in May 2025 to address SANDF base security.

Hattingh warned that cable theft, vandalism, and illegal settlements around bases are crippling security systems and creating national-security risks.
Several bases, including Marievale, Lenz, Jan Kempdorp, Wallmannsthal, and Wingfield, have been flagged for serious concerns.
