Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has called for the final report of the Madlanga Commission to go beyond diagnosing problems in the justice system and actually drive reform.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the commission’s interim report was submitted to President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mkhwanazi highlighted corruption, political interference, and systemic failures that undermine police work.

“We could no longer pretend everything was working,” he said.
He stressed that police are often blamed for issues that arise after arrests, particularly in prosecution and sentencing.
The interim report remains confidential, with the final report expected in 2026, and the Presidency has urged patience to ensure the process is completed properly.
Mkhwanazi emphasised the role of public scrutiny in exposing problems and the need for a criminal justice system that functions effectively.
