Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on leave of absence following allegations of interference in police investigations and ties to service provider Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Professor Firoz Cachalia will take over as acting police minister from 1 August.
Ramaphosa made the announcement on Sunday.
The president has also announced the formation of a judicial commission of inquiry, led by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, to probe the infiltration of South Africa’s law enforcement and justice institutions by criminal syndicates.
