Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Judge President Dunstan Mlambo as the new Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, with the appointment set to take effect on Friday, 1 August 2025.
The announcement was made by the Presidency on Thursday, confirming that the decision was made in accordance with section 174(3) of the Constitution, which requires the President to consult the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and leaders of parties in the National Assembly before making a judicial appointment.
Judge Mlambo has served as Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court since November 2012, presiding over one of the busiest and most influential courts in the country.
Ramaphosa notified Chief Justice Mandisa Maya in writing of his decision, stating that he had taken into consideration the views expressed by the JSC and political parties.

He also praised the JSC for its “transparent, inclusive and robust process”, describing it as an affirmation of South Africa’s constitutional principles.
“The process exemplified the Commission’s commitment to upholding the nation’s constitutional values,” Ramaphosa said.
“It has enhanced the nation’s confidence that the appointment of the Deputy Chief Justice was firmly grounded on merit, fidelity to the Constitution, and a vision for the continued transformation and strengthening of the Judiciary.”
The President thanked Justice Mlambo for accepting the “new responsibility of critical national importance” and expressed confidence in his ability to “strengthen the rule of law, enrich jurisprudence, and assert the rights of all citizens.”
Justice Mlambo will succeed Justice Maya in the deputy role, following her elevation earlier this year to the position of Chief Justice. His appointment comes at a time when the judiciary faces increasing scrutiny over access to justice, transformation, and judicial independence.
