Johannesburg – Loyiso Masuku has been sworn in as the first female deputy mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
She was elected unopposed on Tuesday during a council meeting and will assist Mayor Dada Morero in overseeing governance and service delivery in the city.
Masuku said her focus will include strengthening oversight, improving intergovernmental cooperation and supporting turnaround plans aimed at improving revenue collection and basic service delivery.

Her election is linked to internal political dynamics within the African National Congress in Johannesburg, where factional negotiations reportedly led to the creation of the deputy mayor position, according to The Citizen.

Party secretary-general Fikile Mbalula had warned that removing Morero during an election period could destabilise governance in the city.
Before becoming deputy mayor, Masuku served as MMC for finance in the city.
