Cape Town – Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has reaffirmed plans to build a R114 million security barrier along the N2, known as the Edge Safety Project, following another violent incident near Khayelitsha.
The move comes amid growing concerns over hijackings, smash-and-grab attacks, and stone-throwing along the busy route between Cape Town International Airport and the city centre.
On 18 February, three armed men dressed in black reportedly attempted to ambush motorists on the inbound N2 before Mew Way, pointing semi-automatic rifles at passing vehicles.

The suspects fled into Khayelitsha and remain at large.
City officials say the proposed wall is aimed at improving safety for commuters, pedestrians, and nearby communities.
Hill-Lewis insisted the city will proceed with the project, stating that the focus is not on whether to build the barrier, but on how quickly it can be completed to enhance public safety.
“And still a few people say we should not build a proper security barrier on the N2! 🤦♂️ Kan jy dit glo! [Can you believe it?], he tweeted of the incident.

Let me be quite clear. We will do whatever we can to make Capetonians safer. The only question is not if we should, but how we can do it as soon as possible! ✅ pic.twitter.com/TjB9Idltgt
