Cape Town – The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party has taken legal action against President Cyril Ramaphosa, filing an application with the Constitutional Court to overturn his decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave.
The party claims the move was irrational, unconstitutional, and inconsistent with the Presidential Oath.
The court application follows MK-led marches in Pretoria supporting KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who earlier accused Mchunu of having links to crime syndicates.

MK insists Mchunu must be fired and that Ramaphosa should resign, arguing that he is unfit to lead and uses commissions of inquiry to shield himself from accountability.

The president had appointed Firoz Cachalia, and then temporarily Gwede Mantashe, as acting police ministers, a move the MK party says was done “through the back door” and violates the Constitution.
The party had also issued an ultimatum demanding Ramaphosa resign by 8am on Mandela Day, vowing to proceed with a motion of no confidence, mass action, and further litigation after the president failed to comply.
MK further criticised Ramaphosa over the Phala Phala scandal and the CR17 campaign finances, calling for him to face justice.
