Johannesburg – The remains of Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport Andile Mngwevu have been found in Mozambique, a week after he went missing during severe flooding.
Mngwevu, 40, was part of an official delegation when the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by fast-moving floodwaters.
His remains, along with those of three others, were recovered following a joint search-and-rescue operation involving South African teams and Mozambican authorities.

Mngwevu’s family confirmed his death, describing him as a devoted public servant whose life was marked by humility, compassion and a deep commitment to serving others.
“The Mngwevu family announces with deep sorrow and profound sadness the untimely passing of our beloved son, husband, father and dedicated servant of the people, Mr Andile Mngwevu.

“…This devastating incident has left the family, friends, colleagues, and the broader community heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss,” the family said.
They said Mngwevu’s life was defined by humility, compassion, and “an unwavering commitment to serving others.”
The family said his passing has left the family and community heartbroken and requested privacy as they mourn, with memorial and funeral details to be announced later.
