Johannesburg – EFF leader Julius Malema is set to appear at the East London Magistrate’s Court on 23 January for pre-sentencing following his 2018 firearm-related conviction.
He was found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, and reckless endangerment during the EFF’s fifth birthday celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.
Malema maintains the case is politically motivated, claiming the firearm was a toy, and intends to appeal any sentence to the highest court. His co-accused, Adriaan Snyman, was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

Lobby group AfriForum has called for a custodial sentence, citing the seriousness of the offences, while legal analysts suggest a direct imprisonment sentence is likely but may be suspended.
Heightened security is expected as supporters gather for the pre-sentencing proceedings, which are expected to draw significant public and political attention.
