Johannesburg – Deputy Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Kenny Kunene has been reappointed as the City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport by Mayor Dada Morero, and will officially be sworn in on Monday.
The decision comes after tense negotiations between the African National Congress (ANC) and the PA, following weeks of political wrangling. Last week, PA president Gayton McKenzie issued a blunt ultimatum to the ANC, demanding Kunene’s reinstatement or threatening to withdraw from the Government of National Unity (GNU) and collapse coalition agreements.
McKenzie further vowed to resign from his Cabinet post as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture if his party’s demands were ignored.
Kunene had voluntarily stepped aside earlier this year after allegations surfaced of links to murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe. An independent law firm has since cleared him of any wrongdoing, paving the way for his return.
Confirming the resolution, McKenzie expressed satisfaction with the ANC’s handling of the standoff, posting on X (formerly Twitter):
“I wanna thank the @MYANC in the manner in which we sorted out our disagreement regarding the @Kenny_T_Kunene matter. Most importantly I wanna thank @OnsBaizaNie for trusting us as leadership. Let’s work 💚🤛”
