Johannesburg – The Department of Defence (DoD) has announced that South Africa is engaging its BRICS partners on the postponement of a joint naval exercise with Russia and China, originally scheduled for November 2025.
This marks the third iteration of the biennial exercise, which rotates among BRICS member states. China is set to host this year’s exercise.
According to the DoD, consultations are underway with the Presidency and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to agree on a new date that does not conflict with logistical, security, and operational requirements tied to South Africa’s upcoming G20 Presidency.
“The engagements are aimed at ensuring that the naval exercises do not impact on the arrangements associated with South Africa’s G20 Presidency,” the department said in a statement.
South Africa’s participation in such multinational military exercises is part of its broader strategy to strengthen multilateral and bilateral relations.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has previously conducted joint exercises with countries including Brazil, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States.
