Cape Town – Political parties are reportedly questioning the links between controversial businessman Hangwani Maumela and top ANC leaders, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s repeated denial of a personal relationship with Maumela.
Maumela, accused by the SIU of benefiting from Tembisa Hospital corruption, allegedly gained over R800 million, while cartels looted at least R2 billion from the facility.
Ramaphosa admitted knowing Maumela’s mother through a family connection dating back 47 years but claimed he had never met Maumela before 2022.
President Cyril Ramaphosa on Hangwani Maumela: 47 years ago, I got married to his father’s sister, his aunt and we divorced 43 years ago. I did not know him, because I had never encountered him, I had never seen him, and that was gospel truth. pic.twitter.com/yphUNaG4Qg

He described two brief encounters in 2024 outside Maumela’s home.
According to The Citizen, Opposition parties — including MK, ActionSA, ATM, and UDM — expressed scepticism about Ramaphosa’s account, calling it inconsistent and questioning his transparency.
They suggested Maumela may have ANC ties and urged his prosecution.
The DA also alleged Maumela is protected by powerful politicians and well connected within ANC circles.
“There is no way that he could have pulled this off without any assistance,” the report quoted DA shadow MEC for Health in Gauteng, Jack Bloom as saying.
