Cape Town – The Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa is under strain after President Cyril Ramaphosa fired DA member Andrew Whitfield from his post as deputy minister.
The dismissal, reportedly due to an unauthorised trip to the US, sparked backlash from DA leader John Steenhuisen, who accused Ramaphosa of hypocrisy for not acting against ANC ministers implicated in corruption.
Steenhuisen issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the removal of all underperforming ministers or risk the DA pulling out of the GNU.
The DA is expected to announce its decision today, Saturday 28 June 2025, during a press briefing led by Steenhuisen and other senior party officials.
“Today, Saturday 28 June 2025, the DA will brief the media and South Africa at the expiry of the 48 hour ultimatum given to President Ramaphosa to remove compromised and corrupt ministers from his national executive,” the party said.
