Johannesburg – Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero faces a motion of no confidence on Thursday, initiated by Al Jama-ah and supported by other minority parties, who accuse him of poor service delivery and failing to consult coalition partners.
Morero previously survived a DA-sponsored no-confidence vote last year, while another Al Jama-ah motion was withdrawn before voting.
Pressure for his removal is growing, including from within the ANC, after he stepped down as the party’s city leader, with some factions backing his successor, Loyiso Masuku.
A recent multi-party coalition meeting called on the ANC to recall Morero, and the party’s Gauteng and national leadership are discussing the matter.
However, with local government elections approaching, concerns remain that a leadership change could hurt the ANC.
The motion will be debated in the city council.
