Cape Town – Professor Firoz Cachalia is set to be sworn in as acting police minister at the Union Buildings on Friday, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place Senzo Mchunu on special leave amid serious allegations.
The announcement followed shortly after the Constitutional Court rejected a legal bid by former president Jacob Zuma and the MK Party, which sought to block Ramaphosa’s appointment of Cachalia as acting police minister after placing Senzo Mchunu on leave.
The Constitutional Court dismissed a legal challenge by Zuma and the MK Party against Cachalia’s appointment and the establishment of the Madlanga commission.
The Madlanga commission, chaired by acting deputy chief justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, will investigate allegations of criminal syndicate infiltration and corruption within law enforcement and related institutions, including the police, National Prosecuting Authority, State Security Agency, judiciary, and metropolitan police.

It will also examine whether senior officials or members of the national executive were complicit in these alleged activities.
Ramaphosa cited concerns about the rule of law and national security in placing Mchunu on leave after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged possible underworld links.
The commission aims to restore public confidence by probing serious claims of organized crime influence and misconduct in the criminal justice system.
Cachalia is expected to assume his duties as acting police minister with immediate effect after taking the oath of office.
