Cape Town – ANC NEC member Senzo Mchunu has warned that the party is on the brink of collapse unless urgent action is taken ahead of next year’s local government elections.
Speaking in Ngwavuma at the unveiling of struggle stalwart Nokuhamba Nyawo’s tombstone over the weekend, Mchunu said failure to win municipalities would spell disaster for the ANC in the 2029 national polls, reported Times Live.

“If we do not win municipalities in the upcoming local government next year, come the national government elections, we will be history,” the report quoted him as saying.

He admitted the party had grown arrogant and lost public trust but insisted there was still time to regroup and win back members.
Mchunu, currently on special leave over corruption allegations, avoided discussing his case, saying he would speak at the right time.
KZN ANC coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu said the party is campaigning hard to rebuild numbers, stressing they do not want coalitions with the IFP or DA, whom he described as “rivals”.
He admitted the ANC must blame itself for its losses but expressed confidence in a comeback.
